Energy Union to be outstanding issue during Slovak presidency of EU in 2016

Xinhua, March 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Energy Union will feature as one of the most prominent issues during Slovakia's presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2016, Peter Javorcik, state secretary of Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry, said on Thursday.

"The Slovak economy - which is energy-intense - is still vulnerable when it comes to energy security. Even though many things have improved in the past years, resources still haven't been diversified sufficiently," said Javorcik during the third workshop of the National Convention on the EU in Bratislava.

According to Javorcik the Slovak presidency will also strive to overcome barriers in boosting the role of a European energy regulator.

Matus Misik from Comenius University's Department of Political Sciences noted that national regulators have already expressed their uneasiness about strengthening regulation at the European level.

"Regulation isn't only a technical and energy question, it's also a political issue that's frequently being used for domestic political purposes. These are reasons why certain member states will disagree with the transfer of powers," added Misik. Endit
