The Singapore Design Week (SDW) 2015 was officially opened on Thursday with the launch of the Fifty Years of Singapore Design exhibition by the country's Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim.

"Design is an important enabler of economic growth," said Yaacob Ibrahim in a media release, "the design sector has also provided opportunities for Singaporeans to pursue careers and develop their talent through capability building."

Paying tribute to Singapore's 50 years of independence, the Fifty Years of Singapore Design exhibition includes more than 200 design artifacts from four categories -- visual communications, product and industrial, fashion and accessories, and environmental design. The exhibition showcases how design has evolved and contributed to Singapore's economic growth and nation development over the past five decades.

Organized by the DesignSingapore Council, SDW returns in its second edition with over 60 new and enhanced events, activities and shows starting from Tuesday to March 22.

Besides the Fifty Years of Singapore Design exhibition, SingaPlural 2015, the Singapore Design Business Summit, New British Inventors: Inside Heatherwick Studio and MAISON&OBJET Asia also highlight this year's event.

As anchor event of this year's SDW, SingaPlural 2015 shows the design process from conceptualizing to making and selling. Meanwhile, the Singapore Design Business Summit has expanded its scope to have more in-depth discussions about emerging trends of integrating design, business and technology. Endi
