Serbian international defender Matija

Nastasic will remain with Schalke until the end of the 2018-19

season, the German Bundesliga club announced Wednesday.

Schalke decided to pay Manchester City 9.5 million euros (10.2 million U.S. dollars) for the buyout option for the defender, who moved to Schalke during the winter break from Manchester City.

"I am proud and happy that I am staying with Schalke," said the

21-year-old.

The Serbian had strong showings in seven Bundesliga matches and two Champions League games against Real Madrid, which convinced the Schalke to keep the player in long term.

Nastasic, who has earned 17 caps for Serbia, moved from Italian club Fiorentina to Manchester City at the end of August 2012. Last season, he helped the Premier League club to the league and cup titles. Endi
