Budapest will replace Guadalajara to host the 2017 world swimming championships as the Mexican city withdrew due to financial problems.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban made the announcement Wednesday in parliament accompanied by Cornel Marculescu, executive director of FINA, the international swimming federation.
The championships will be the largest international event hosted by the Hungarian capital, which had been scheduled to host the 2021 world swimming championships, but a new bidding process will be open for that event, FINA said in a statement.
The world championships are held every two years and feature swimming, diving, open water swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo.
Mexico withdrew last month, citing budget shortfalls connected with the recent drop in oil prices. This year's championships will be held in Kazan, Russia Endi
