On-camera mugging of TV crew shocks S. Africans

Xinhua, March 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

South Africans were shocked on Wednesday by a camera footage which shows a group of robbers mugging a TV crew in Johannesburg despite being filmed.

"We are shocked at the brazen nature of this crime. The robbers attacked the crew while the cameraman was filming this incident," Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lt General Lesetja Mothiba said.

The footage shows a crew of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) being mugged in full view of cameras outside Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.

Police said the armed men robbed the crew of their valuables, including laptops and cellular phones, despite standing directly in the crew's spotlight. No injuries were reported.

The crew were preparing for a live crossing on Tuesday night after covering the arrival of Zambian President Edgar Lungu at the hospital for medical treatment.

The incident highlights the seriousness of crimes in South Africa which has one of the highest crime rates in the world.

Police will do everything in their power to ensure that the suspects are brought to book, Mothiba said. A case of robbery and theft has been opened, he said. Police appealed to anyone with information to come forward by phoning the Crime Stop number 08600 10111. Endi
