Frenchman on death row in Indonesia undergoes first trial on judicial review

Xinhua, March 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

A court in Tanggerang near Jakarta Wednesday kicked off the first hearing of judicial review concerning a Frenchman on death row for drug offense.

Serge Atlaoui, 51, is one of ten foreign drug convicts, including two high-profile Australians and one Brazilian, who face imminent execution after losing their appeals for presidential clemency recently.

During the session, the judge said the hearing failed to present new evidence and witnesses and the court session would continue after next two weeks.

Defendant lawyers Nancy Yuliana said her client is not guilty, arguing that her client was not a producer of narcotics, but only worked as a welder at the place turned to be a drug factory in Cikande of Tanggerang.

Serge was arrested in 2005 and sentenced to death penalty by the Indonesian Supreme Court on drug charges in 2007.

Since then he has been detained in the prison at the Nusakambangan island.

In January, his plea for clemency was rejected by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who has declared to take stern punishment against drug offenders as he considers the country being in an emergency drug danger. Endi
