Xinhua summary of Asia-Pacific stocks news at 1100 GMT, March 11

The Australian share market dropped more than 1 percent on Wednesday following a major fall on Wall Street over night.

At the official market open, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index fell 69.9 points, or 1.2 percent, to 5,754.3 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index was slipped 68.6 points, or 1.18 percent, to 5,725.7 points.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares opened lower on Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) fell 11. 45 points, or 0.58 percent, to trade at 1,973.32 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's share prices closed down 0.13 percent Wednesday with the weighted index down 13.35 points at 9,523.18, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

Turnover totaled 96.01 billion new Taiwan dollars (3.03 billion U.S.dollars) during the trading session.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks rose 0.31 percent Wednesday on optimism over Japanese economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 58.41 points, from Tuesday at 18,723.52. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 0.92 point, or 0.06 percent, higher at 1,525.67.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.48 percent lower on Wednesday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index decreased by 37. 78 points to 7790.70. The all-share index went down by 30.15 points, or 0.66 percent, to 4523.62.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks moved down 179.01 points, or 0.75 percent, to close on Wednesday at 23,717.97 points.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 23,703.84 and 23, 899.86. Turnover totaled 78.26 billion HK dollars (about 10.09 billion U.S.dollars).

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in southern Vietnam,closed at 586.54 points on Wednesday, down 3.12 points, or 0.53 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 86.316 million shares worth 1.565 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (72.96 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange. Prices of 79 stocks went up, 136 stocks fell down, while 73 stocks remained unchanged.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX- Index, closed at 86.01 points on Wednesday, down 0.35 points, or 0. 41 percent, against the previous trading session.

A total of 37.882 million shares worth 580.032 billion Vietnamese dong (27.17 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Wednesday, a decrease of 5.06 percent in volume and an increase of 6.71 percent in value against the previous trading session.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) down 19.67 points, or 0.58 percent, to close at 3,378.59.

A total of 1.36 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1. 22 billion Singapore dollars (897.1 million U.S. dollars).

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's DSE (Dhaka Stock Exchange) Broad Index closed on Wednesday at 4,885.73 points, down 63.58 points or about 1.37 percent from Tuesday's finish.

Among a total of 308 issues traded, 43 registered gains and 234 incurred losses while 31 remained unchanged.

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed lower by 43.36 points, or 0. 79 percent, to a level of 5,419.57 on Wednesday.

Some 413,174 transactions were booked, involving 6.77 billion shares worth 7.39 trillion rupiah (about 561.38 million U.S. dollars).

MUMBAI -- Indian stocks extended losses for a third continuous session on Wednesday, as gains in telecommunications stocks over spectrum auctions were offset by a sharp fall in Hindalco Industries Ltd over an investigation into the allocation of coal blocks.

The benchmark BSE Sensex closed at 28,659.17, 50.70 points or 0. 18 percent down from previous close of 28,709.87 points.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,778.16 down 11. 57 points or 0.65 percent, and the Emas was at 12,266.22 down 82. 04 points or 0.67 percent.

BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed mixed on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.15 percent to finish at 3, 290.9 points.
