Colombian president orders temporary suspension of bombing FARC

Xinhua, March 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Tuesday ordered suspension for a month of bombings on camps of FARC rebel group to decelerate the five-decade-long armed conflict in the country.

In a nationally televised speech, the president said that he has decided to stop the bombings given the great progress achieved in the ongoing peace talks in Havana, Cuba, with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the country's largest rebel group

But Santos said "We will not waive bombings in any case if we see an imminent threat to the population. The public forces will continue to fulfill its obligation to protect all Colombians, and will not neglect an inch of our territory."

He also said that offensive against the National Liberation Army (ELN) will continue as the guerrilla group failed to stop its criminal activities.

"For that reason, we will intensify our military and police operations against them. I hope indeed that the ELN does not leave the train of peace," the Colombian president said.

Santos also said that the security forces have increased actions against drug trafficking, criminal mining and extortion.

The Colombian government and the FARC have signed three of the five items on the agenda in the peace negotiations that started in 2012. In the latest round of talks that ended Saturday in Havana, the two sides also announced a joint effort to remove unexploded land mines. Endi
