The city manager of Ferguson resigned Tuesday after a federal report pointed out a culture of racism within the police department and municipal offices in the Missouri town.
Ferguson has been at the center of racial tensions nationwide since Darren Wilson, a white officer, shot and killed Michael Brown, an unarmed black 18-year-old, last year.
On Tuesday, the City Council voted 7 to 0 to approve a "mutual separation agreement" with City Manager John Shaw, who has served since 2007, Mayor James Knowles III said in a written statement.
"We appreciate John's service and commitment to the City of Ferguson for the past eight years," it said.
Shaw denied that his office played any part in targeting black people. "Any inferences of that kind from the DOJ (Department of Justice) report are simply false," he said Tuesday night.
A DOJ report, released one week earlier, found systematic racism within the Ferguson Police Department. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder warned last week the DOJ reserves the rights to force immediate change in Ferguson policing and court practice. Endi
