Zambian president to undergo specialized treatment abroad

Xinhua, March 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Doctors have recommended that Zambian President Edgar Lungu undergo specialized treatment abroad for the problem of narrowing of the food pipe he has been diagnosed with, his office said in a statement on Monday.

The Zambian leader failed to officiate at the International Women's Day celebrations at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, the Zambian capital, on Sunday, after he developed some discomfort, with initial tests revealing fatigue and traces of malaria as well as low blood sugar level.

Doctors attending to the Zambian leader at a military hospital, Maina Soko, in Lusaka have recommended that the 58-year-old leader should undergo a high-tech medical procedure abroad because the procedure is currently not available in Zambia.

The statement added that the medical team has explored options of correcting the narrowing of the food pipe (medically known as achalasia) that led to his illness, and recommended that a high- tech medical procedure was needed.

The statement could however not state when the Zambian leader will leave for the specialized treatment.

Lungu became Zambia's sixth president after winning a presidential election held in January necessitated by the death of President Michael Sata who died while attending medical check-ups in London last year. Endi
