Hundreds of passengers were stranded at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport on Sunday after labor action forced low-cost carrier Norwegian to cancel flights, Finnish national radio Yle quoted the Finnish airport authority Finavia as saying.
The labor action, in support of the strike staged by Norway-based pilots, ended as scheduled at 5 p.m. (1500 GMT) on Sunday. However, Norwegian flights were still delayed during the evening.
A union representing the ground handling personnel serving Norwegian in Finland arranged the walkout following a request by a union in Norway. The Finland-based pilots of Norwegian are not on strike.
Norwegian announced on its website that 10 departures and 13 arrivals had been cancelled in Finland. Almost all flights in Norway and Sweden by the carrier had been cancelled on Sunday while some operated in Denmark.
The Norwegian low cost carrier is a major regional competitor to Finnair and Scandinavian Airlines System SAS. Endit
