Spain's Marin wins women's singles title at All England (updated with quotes)

Xinhua, March 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Spain's Carolina Marin fought back from one game down to defeat India's Saina Nehwal to win the women's singles title at the All England badminton championships here on Sunday.

The sixth seed, a surprise winner at last year's world championships, dropped 16-21 in the first game to third-seeded Nehwal, but made a strong comeback afterwards, winning 21-14 and 21-7 for her first title at the world's oldest badminton tournament.

"At the beginning I felt nervous and I couldn't concentrate because my hand was so nervous," said Marin of her first game loss.

But then she talked to herself to calm down to enjoy the match.

"I was thinking about my game plan," she said. "I just tried to put some pressure and make the match more faster, more speed onto my shuttle and not to make easy mistakes."

In the mixed doubles final earlier, Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia's hope of winning a fourth successive title was dashed by Chinese duo Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei 21-10, 21-10.

Zhang and Zhao were twice beaten by the Indonesian pair in the last two year's finals.

"We are very happy indeed as the last time we won here was back in 2010," Zhang said. "We missed the trophy and we were hungry to win - and we did it."

China has secured the women's doubles title with fifth seeds Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang taking on teammates Bao Yixin and Tang Yuanting in the final later.

The men's doubles final will be held between Chinese pair Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan and Denmark's second seeds Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen. Endi
