Hooligan violence in Greece persisted this weekend as the Super League football championship resumed behind closed doors amidst a fresh campaign to curb clashes between fans.

Two weeks ago the Sports Ministry suspended the games for a week following the violent scuffles between fans during two matches in the third time in six months.

This weekend the Super League games restarted behind closed doors as the ministry in cooperation with football associations examines measures to address the problem.

Shut out of stadiums hooligans clashed this time outside the offices of a fan club in the city of Thessaloniki in northern Greece.

At least one person was seriously injured during the clashes between fans of PAOK and rivals who supported Aris club, local police said.

Among the measures examined at the moment was the shutdown of fan clubs.

In autumn a football fan died in similar clashes during a third division game on the island of Crete. The second time the championship was suspended after the injury of a referee official in an assault. Endit
