Tokyo stocks open higher on Wall St gains

Tokyo stocks opened modestly higher in early trading Friday following gains overnight in Wall Street.

At 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 108.35 points, or 0.58 percent, from Thursday to 18,860.19.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 5.27 points, or 0.35 percent, to 1,528. 99.

Major gaining industry sectors included precision instruments, insurance and pharmaceuticals. Endi
