Two Germans receive jail, caning for vandalism in Singapore

Xinhua, March 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two German nationals have been sentenced to nine months' imprisonment as well as three strokes of cane in Singapore for vandalizing a subway train earlier in November last year, local media reported on Thursday.

Andreas Von Knorre, 22, and Elton Hinz, 21, were reported to arrive in Singapore from Australia on Nov. 4 last year. Both were nabbed by Malaysian police at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on November 20 after they broke into the protected Bishan SMRT depot in Singapore and sprayed graffiti on a train there.

They were then extradited to Singapore and pleaded guilty to two charges of vandalism and illegal trespass.

"This is the darkest episode of my entire life, I am very angry with myself." Channel NewsAsia reported, citing Von Knorre in court.

This is the third breach at the depot since 2011, despite improvements such as reinforced steel fences and intrusion detection systems. The depot at Changi was also breached in May 2010. Endi
