Norwegian Nobel Committee changes chairman

The Norwegian Nobel Committee chose a new chairman on Tuesday after a closed-door meeting, replacing Thorbjoern Jagland with Kaci Kullman Five, a senior Conservative politician.

Jagland, who was elected to head the committee in 2009, would remain as a member of the committee, many of the prizes which gave in the past six years during Jagland's term, were controversial.

The new election result reflected the change in the new composition of the committee in which three members are now from the ruling Conservative and Progress parties, according to Norwegian media reports.

Some Norwegian politicians including those from the right-wing Progress party are of the view that Jagland should not hold both the secretary general of the Council of Europe and the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. They say the two posts are conflicting.

Jagland left the meeting immediately after Tuesday's meeting. Endit
