No Ugandan troops to deploy on border with Sudan: South Sudanese official

Xinhua, March 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

South Sudan on Monday refuted reports that it intends to deploy Ugandan troops on its border with Sudan.

"The Ugandan troops in South Sudan are only in three areas including Juba, Bor and Bantio," the South Sudanese ambassador to Khartoum, Mayan Dot, said in a statement. "There is no presence for those troops on the border with Sudan."

Earlier, the official SUNA news agency quoted a Sudanese official as saying that 16,000 Ugandan troops would be deployed on the border between Sudan and South Sudan.

Ugandan troops are fighting alongside South Sudanese government forces against the rebels led by former Vice-President Riek Machar.

The ties between Khartoum and Kampala have witnessed continued tension as Sudan accuses Uganda of supporting and harboring rebels of the Darfur armed movements and the Revolutionary Front which are fighting Sudanese government forces in Sudan's Blue Nile and South Kordofan areas.

However, the tension has recently eased since the Ugandan government announced in early January 2014 that it would expel the Sudanese opposition groups from its territories. Endit
