UN to continue supporting Lebanon with the burdens of Syria crisis

The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag stressed on Thursday that the UN continues to support Lebanon as it faces the impact of the conflict in Syria.

In her visit to the Bekaa, home for 410,000 refugees from Syria, Kaag said in a statement that she appreciated Lebanon's residents in host communities for their generosity and solidarity with the refugees from Syria, stressing the importance of sustained assistance to reinforce stability of Lebanon.

"This is not about differentiation, it is about human dignity, to support the most vulnerable. Safety, security, protection and human rights are needed to ensure the stabilization of Lebanon," Kaag said.

The UN official on Thursday also visited a Syrian refugee site in Fayda/Omarieh and U.N.-funded projects set up in the village of Terbol.

According to the United Nations Higher Commission for Refugees, Lebanon hosts more than 1.2 million Syrian displaced, which places a huge burden on the economic and security situation in the country.

From 2015, the Lebanese authorities started applying strict restrictions to limit the influx of Syrian refugees to the country.

Minister of Social Affairs Rachid Derbass pointed out that the measures do not mean "deporting any refugee from Lebanon," stressing that "the country cannot bare more Syria displaced." Endit
