Australia's city of Brisbane is considering making a bid for the 2028 Olympic Games after hosting a successful G20 World Leaders' Summit last year, Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said on Thursday.
Quirk said that he will seek the backing of the entire region in the coming months, adding that Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates had said Brisbane was the best Australian city to make a bid.
Brisbane had entered a bid for the 1992 Olympics but finished third behind Barcelona and Paris in the official ballot held in 1986.
"I think that Brisbane would be the obvious choice for the next Australian Olympic bid," Quirk told the Brisbane Times.
"As Australia's new world city, I think we've demonstrated that we are capable of staging a world event staging it safely, successfully and with attention to detail."
"The reality with any Olympic bid is that we would simply be a cooperating partner as a city authority.
"The resourcing would come through the federal and state governments."
It is estimated that the 2012 London Olympics cost more than 30 billion U.S. dollars to stage.
Applications to bid for the 2024 Games are due to the International Olympic Committee on Sept. 15 and bids for the 2028 Games will start in 2019. Endi
