Jerusalem mayor braves to seize Palestinian stabbing Jew youth

Xinhua, February 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

A Palestinian youth on Sunday evening stabbed a Jewish ultra-Orthodox in Jerusalem, and was arrested by the city's mayor who was present at the scene, officials said.

The victim, a 27-year-old Jew, sustained moderate-to-light injuries in his stomach, said a spokesperson with the emergency services.

The police said that the "terror attack" took place at the Tzahal Square near the Jerusalem town hall. According to initial investigation, the suspect is an 18-year-old Palestinian who was staying in Jerusalem without permits.

Mayor of Jerusalem Nir Barkat and his personal security guard apprehended the suspect seconds after the attack occurred, according to a statement released by the municipality.

Barkat said that he was driving near the scene of the attack when his team saw the attack unfolding.

"My security guard and I jumped straight out of the car, he pulled out his weapon and together we caught the terrorist until police arrived," said Barkat.

The incident was the latest in a string of hostilities in Jerusalem, amid a surge in violence between Arabs and Jews over access to the al-Aqsa mosque compound, a holy place to both Muslims and Jews. Enditem
