U.S. Secretary of State Kerry arrives in Geneva for Iranian nuclear talks

Xinhua, February 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Geneva on Sunday afternoon for nuclear talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif to narrow gaps over Tehran's disputed nuclear program.

The top U.S. diplomat said on Saturday in London that "there are still significant gaps" for the negotiations, and "there is still a distance to travel".

According to a statement from U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz, at the request of Kerry, would join talks "to continue these ongoing detailed technical deliberations".

Iranian media Presstv reported that Iranian atomic energy head Ali Akbar Salehi would meet with Moniz in the Swiss city to discuss "the technical issues".

A close aide and the brother of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Hossein Fereydoon was also reportedly to be present during the talks.

Kerry said on Saturday that the presence of Moniz "is a reflection of the fact that these talks are very technical, and because we are pushing to try to come to agreement on some very difficult issues".

But Kerry noted that "I would not read into it any indication whatsoever that something is about to be decided as a result of that". Endit
