The following are major news items in leading German newspapers on Friday.

Die Welt:

-- German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble dashed new hopes for a quick debt deal with Athens. Shortly after the new government of Alexis Tsipras officially filed an application for extending a bailout agreement with the Eurogroup, Schaeuble sent a message to the public: "The letter from Athens is not a substantial solution proposal. Sueddeutsche Zeitung:

-- More than 12 million people in Germany are living at the risk of poverty, a new record since Germany's reunification, said a report of the German Charities Association. The report also said that incomes in northern and eastern Germany are particularly low.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung:

-- Germany's Federal Office for Migration and Refugees expects at least 300,000 asylum applications in 2015. At the same time, the number of deportations increased. According to an official spokeswoman of the agency, for some time, most of those who apply for asylum in Germany came from Syria. Endit
