Nikkei closes at 15-year high on Japan optimism

Tokyo stocks ended at its highest level in nearly 15 years on Friday amid optimism over Japan's economic recovery.

The 225-issue Nikkei index rose 67.51 points, or 0.37 percent, from Thursday to 18,332.30, the highest close since May 2000.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 5.40 points, or 0.36 percent, to 1,500. 33.

Major gainers included pulp and paper, metal products and mining issues.

The turnover was 2,377.9 billion yen (about 19.20 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
