New Zealand Attorney-General Christopher Finlayson on Friday revealed he had spoken at a controversial Washington summit aimed at fighting violent extremism.
Finlayson said he had represented New Zealand at the ministerial meeting of the White House Summit on Countering Violent Extremism in Washington on Feb. 19.
The meeting, chaired by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and addressed by President Barrack Obama, set an action agenda to counter violent extremism through community engagement.
Finlayson said in a statement that he had addressed the meeting on the importance of strengthening the role of civil society in preventing violent extremism, particularly how to engage youth.
"In the current global environment, it is important that the international community comes together to develop best practice measures against violent extremism," Finlayson said.
A ministerial meeting communique would be available at a later stage, he said. Endit
