Xinhua, February 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

The number of naturalizations in Austria reached 7,693 in 2014, a 3.7 percent increase over the previous year, Statistics Austria revealed in its latest preliminary calculations Thursday.

The largest increases as a percentage were in the states of Styria (20 percent increase with 666 persons naturalized), Vienna (8.6 percent increase with 2,632 persons naturalized), and Burgenland (7.9 percent increase with 150 persons naturalized).

Based on country of previous citizenship, most naturalizations were for persons from Bosnia and Herzegovina with 1,120 (or 14.6 percent of the total), followed by Turkey with 885 naturalizations, Serbia with 671, the Russian Federation with 433.

Of the total number of naturalized persons, 37.1 percent were born in Austria, 39.1 percent were under 18 years of age, while 123 had their primary residence abroad.

Naturalizations in the Central European country hit a record 45,112 in 2003 before falling steadily to reach a low of 6,190 in the year 2010. Since 2011, however, there has once again been a gradual upward tendency, Statistics Austria figures showed. Endit
