Nikkei rises 0.36 pct on Japan optimism

Tokyo stocks rose 0.36 percent to a nearly 15-year high Thursday, bolstered by optimism about Japan's economic recovery.

The 225-issue index was up 65.62 points, from Wednesday at 18, 264.79, the highest close since May 2000.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 12.26 points, or 0.83 percent, to 1, 494.93.

Major gainers included bank, brokerage and shipping issues.

The turnover was 2,564.8 billion yen (about 21.61 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
