BUAV calls for an end to trade in Mauritian monkeys

Xinhua, February 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

British Union Against Vivisection (BUAV) has appealed once again to authorities in Mauritius to end the trade of monkeys of the island and exported worldwide.

Dr. Nick Palmer, a former member of the British Parliament and member of the BUAV, met with Environment Minister Raj Dayal on Sunday concerning the export of monkeys from Mauritius to medical research laboratories in Europe and elsewhere in the world.

Dr. Palmer told the press that the meeting with Mr Dayal had been positive as both sides are eager to find solutions to the problem raised. "We expect to make progress in these discussions to end the suffering inflicted on the population of monkeys of Mauritius ," he said.

A petition signed by some 162,000 people worldwide, had called for an end to trade in Mauritian monkeys, revealing the terrible sufferings of these animals exported to a German laboratory. BUAV believes that the use of monkeys in research is wrong and that there are better ways to conduct research .

Mauritius is considered one of the largest suppliers of monkeys in the global research industry. Endi
