Myanmar defense chief re-empowers Laukkai commander for military administration

Xinhua, February 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Myanmar's Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing has re-empowered Colonel Saw Myint Oo, Laukkai Regional Commander, to exercise the executive and judicial powers for military administration in the Kokang Self-Administered Zone, northeastern Shan state, said an announcement of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) on military administration published Wednesday.

Aimed at bringing back community peace and tranquillity and prevalence of law and order in the region, the follow-up announcement came after Myanmar government declared a state of emergency in Kokang region with martial law introduced in the region, empowering the commander-in-chief for the military administration.

The state of emergency was declared as armed clashes in the Kokang region have caused widespread chaos, leading to the failure of local administration mechanism, according to the announcement of the President's Office.

The state of emergency is to be effective for 90 days. Endite
