Nikkei opens sharply higher on Wall St. gains

Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher in early trade Wednesday, following gains on Wall Street amid optimism about Greece potentially reaching an agreement with its eurozone peers on a loan extension.

At 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue index was up 152.69 points, or 0.85 percent, from Tuesday to 18,139.78, the highest intraday level since July 2007.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 15.92 points, or 1.09 percent, at 1, 477.99.

Major gainers included rubber, banking and precision instrument issues. Endi
