Local authority to raise parking fees in Riga

Xinhua, February 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Members of the Riga City Council communications and transport committee on Tuesday decided to raise parking fees and change the zoning of municipal parking lots and garages in the Latvian capital city, the local authority said.

Because of a recent rise of public transport fares in Riga, the number of people using private transport to get to the city center is expected to increase, while the number of passengers in the city's public transport is likely to drop.

The increased number of private transport vehicles is expected to burden traffic in downtown Riga, causing the necessity to upgrade the parking fees, Jelena Dzikevica, the head of the passenger services administration of the city council's transport department, explained.

The hourly fee for parking in the cheapest Zone A territory will be raised to 2.5-3 euros from 1.99-2.85 euros, and parking fees in the costliest Zone R, or Riga Old City, will go up to 5-8 euros from 4.27-7.11 euros.

The prices of Riga residents' monthly parking cards, however, will not be increased.

If Riga City Council approves the new parking fees and zoning at a meeting on Feb. 24, they will take effect on April 1, 2015.

The municipal parking lots and garages in Riga are managed by Rigas Satiksme municipal transport company. Endit
