Nigeria's electoral body attains 76 pct voter cards distribution

Xinhua, February 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nigeria's electoral commission on Tuesday said it had distributed over 52.23 million Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) nationwide, representing 75.88 percent of the total registered voters.

Spokesperson for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Kayode Idowu disclosed this in a statement reaching Xinhua.

Nigeria's national security adviser Sambo Dasuki had urged the electoral commission to delay the nation's elections scheduled for Feb. 14 to allow more time for voter card distribution.

Dasuki said 30 million cards had been distributed over the last year but the same number still remained to be handed out.

The polls are the first in Nigeria to require voters to have biometric cards.

Nigeria, wracked by a violent uprising by Islamists Boko Haram, is scheduled to hold the election on March 28 and April 11 respectively.

Incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan is standing for re- election. His main challenger is former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari. Endi
