British FTSE 100 rises slightly on Tuesday

FTSE 100 Index, the British benchmark stock market gauge, Tuesday increased by 0.60 percent, or 41.08 points, to 6898.13 points, approaching its all-time high of 6930.20 points in late December 1999.

Diageo' share price increased by 2.50 percent, topped the gainers of the blue chips.

Prices of Imperial Tobacco Group, British America Tobacco, Smith & Nephew and Unilever advanced by 2.20 percent, 1.92 percent, 1.90 percent and 1.89 percent respectively.

Tullow Oil led the top losers of the blue chips with a share price drop of 3.36 percent, followed by Royal Mail (2.32 percent), Randgold Resources (1.67 percent), InterContinental Hotels (1.66 percent) and Rolls-Royce Holdings (1.49 percent).

Trading in FTSE 100 companies was around 40 percent below the 30-day average. And the index has gained 5.39 percent so far this year in U.S. dollar term. Endit
