Slovak economy minister to face no-confidence motion

Xinhua, February 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Slovak Economy Minister Pavol Pavlis is set to face a no-confidence motion in parliament on Wednesday, Parliamentary chairman spokesman Pavol Chovanec said Tuesday.

Opposition parties suspect Pavlis of having a conflict of interest regarding a lawsuit filed by a company named Port Service against the National Property Fund (FNM) that could cost the state 60 million euro (68 million U.S. dollars).

It has been pointed out that Port Service -- where Pavlis used to be chairman of the board of directors -- filed a lawsuit against FNM five days before Pavlis became a member of FNM's supervisory board. Port Services sought compensation for being excluded from a privatization tender due to its failure to meet the requirements.

In 2008, the company lost the lawsuit against the state. Following an appeal by then prosecutor general Dobroslav Trnka, however, the senate entitled it to claims for lost profits worth 60 million euros. The case has now been returned to lower courts. Endit
