U.S. President Barack Obama and Italy's new President Sergio Mattarella agreed on Tuesday to continue "close coordination" to cope with "shared challenges."

In a telephone conversation, the two leaders reaffirmed the " deep and abiding" ties between their countries, the White House said in a statement.

"They agreed that the U.S. and Italian governments will remain in close coordination to address shared challenges," the statement said.

Mattarella, 73, was sworn in on Feb. 3, three days after being elected by a collection of more than 1,000 lawmakers and regional government representatives. In their phone talks, Obama congratulated him on his election. Endite
