Air pollution in Poland most severe in EU: media

Xinhua, February 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Poland has the highest air pollution level among all European Union countries, Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza reported Monday.

The European Commission has sent a reminder to the Polish government, and the country might face a fine up to 1 billion euros (1.13 billion U.S. dollars), the report added.

Several Polish cities did not meet EU air purity standards. In many towns, the concentration of harmful particles in the air such as PM 10 and benzopyrene exceeded the standards several times.

The Commission has given Poland two months to improve the situation, failing which the country might face a fine.

Apart from Poland, 15 other EU countries are being subject to European Commission proceedings for their air pollution levels. Endit
