Iceland vows support to Denmark following shootings in Copenhagen

Iceland's Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson sent condolences to Denmark following two shootings in Copenhagen, according to a statement released by the prime minister's office on Monday.

On a phone call, Gunnlaugsson told his Danish counterpart Helle Thorning-Schmidt that Icelanders' thoughts are with their close friends in this difficult time.

He said the attacks were a challenge to the democracy and human rights which were characteristics of Danish society. It is also admirable how Danish people reacted to the events with self-control and determination.

Gunnlaugsson used to live on the street where the synagogue was attacked. He told local media it never occurred to him that such events would ever happen there.

Iceland's Minister for Foreign Affairs Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson and Reykjavik's mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson will attend a memorial service in Copenhagen tonight. Endit
