45 pct of Latvians support EU membership: poll

Nearly half of Latvians support their country's membership in the European Union (EU), representatives of the European Parliament's information office here said, citing the latest Eurobarometer survey.

Asked about their attitude to Latvia's membership in the bloc, 45 percent of respondents said it was a good thing and 44 percent voiced a neutral attitude.

The number of respondents disapproving of Latvia's membership in the EU dropped from 12 percent in 2013 to 10 percent in the latest poll, which was conducted in November 2014.

While 54 percent of respondents in the whole EU believe that the bloc should pay more attention to reducing poverty and social exclusion, 29 percent urge a more active clampdown on terrorism and 25 percent are concerned about immigration, in Latvia, 35 percent of respondents consider security to be the top priority, and 39 percent believe it is necessary to focus on developing the agricultural sector.

The latest Eurobarometer poll was conducted in November-December 2014, interviewing 27,801 people in the 28 EU member states, including 1,003 respondents in Latvia. Endit
