Former Olympic judo champion Ruska passes away

Dutch judo legend Wim Ruska deceased at the age of 74 on Saturday, Dutch media report on Sunday.

Ruska captured two gold medals at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, in the heavyweight class (+93kg) and the open category. His success was overshadowed by the deadly attack on the Israeli delegation, which took place a few days before.

Amsterdam-born Ruska also became world champion +93kg in 1967 and 1971 and captured a total of seven European titles. In 2013 he was inducted in the Hall of Fame of the International Judo Federation.

In 2001 Ruska was hit by a stroke which made him psychically disabled and impeded his talking. He died in a nursing home in Hoorn on Saturday afternoon. Endi
