Latvian FM applauds latest Ukraine ceasefire deal, calls for full implementation

Xinhua, February 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Latvia called on all parties involved in the Ukraine conflict to start a full implementation without delay of the latest agreement reached in the Thursday talks in Minsk, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said on the heels of the talks.

The Latvian foreign ministry said it appreciated the most recent decisions reached in Minsk for a ceasefire that would take effect as from Feb. 15. The withdrawal of heavy weaponry and other important terms and conditions should lead to a de-escalation of the crisis and serve as a basis for a sustainable political solution, while respecting Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, the ministry said in a statement.

"Practical implementation of these agreements will be decisive. Latvia urges all parties, including Russia, to begin conscientiously implementing decisions reached in Minsk without delay, so that human casualties and violence are halted, and further destabilization of the situation in the region is prevented," said Rinkevics.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Thursday that a ceasefire agreement had been reached in overnight talks with the Ukrainian, German and French leaders in the Belarusian capital of Minsk. Enditem
