Xinhua, February 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Malta's aviation facilities Open Day was held on Tuesday at Malta International Airport (MIA) to commemorate the 100th anniversary of aviation in Malta.

On the initiative of the archipelago's Ministry for Tourism, facilities related to aviation including MIA, Air Malta, Lufthansa Technik, Medavia, SR Technics and Malta aviation schools, were opened for visitors at locations around the airport.

Edward Zammit Lewis, Malta's tourism minister, also took part in the open house activities. Zammit Lewis told Xinhua that air connecting activity was an important sector for the island state.

"Ninety-eight per cent of passage traffic happens via air, not via sea. As a government, we will continue improving air connecting activity because air connecting activity gives more flexibility to tourists to come to Malta," said Lewis.

"We will continue to increase our air network, not only in Europe, but even out of Europe to continue increase both European tourists to Malta and even new source market, such as the Asian market, which is becoming increasingly important to our tourism sector," he said.

A ceremony will be held on Feb. 12 to recognize people who have made a valuable contribution to the Maltese aviation sector. Endite
