Germany offers Rwanda 7 mln euros to support decentralization

The Federal Republic of Germany on Monday committed 7 million euros to support Rwanda's decentralization program and good governance.

Claver Gatete, Rwanda's Minister of Finance and Economic Planning said the projects to be undertaken would prioritize district development plans.

Districts would be allowed to implement most local prioritized projects, thus making them more responsive to local needs, the official said.

The funds will also finance income generation and economic infrastructure, including schools, feeder roads and markets, he said.

The grant will not only support rural development and create employment opportunities but also help tackle the effects of climate change.

The German ambassador to Rwanda, Peter Fahrenholtz, said decentralization is the best way to address hindrances to economic development of any economy, which he said requires good governance and delivering services to the citizens.

"I'm hopeful that the money will be well spent to benefit citizens," he said.

Germany has been supporting Rwanda's decentralization through local infrastructure investment since 2006, including financing individual projects such as schools, health centers, electrification, roads and bridges, modern markets and terracing among others worth 34 million euros to date. Endi
