Benfica draws 1-1 with Sporting in Portuguese league

Benfica was held to a 1-1 draw by Sporting on Sunday night in the 20th round of the Portuguese league, at the Alvalade Stadium in capital Lisbon.

Sporting defender Jefferson Nascimiento broke the ice in the 87th minute following a failed attempt by Sporting midfielder Joao Mario, whose effort was blocked by goalkeeper Artur Moraes.

Benfica equalized in the 90th through Brazilian defender Jardel Vieira, with a powerful shot from inside the area.

Benfica stands atop of the Portuguese league with 50 points, while Sporting stands in third with 43 points.

Also on Sunday, Braga beat Estoril 2-0, Nacional was held to a 3-3 draw by Arouca, Setubal was held to a 0-0 draw by Academica, V. Guimaraes lost to Belenenses 1-0 while Pacos Ferreira beat Penafiel 2-1 and Maritimo lost to Gil Vicente 2-1. Endi
