Australian job advertisements grow: report

Xinhua, February 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Job advertisements in Australia had risen for the eighth consecutive month in January, according to a new survey released on Monday.

The ANZ Bank's job advertisement series reported Australia's labor market is stabilizing across the nation and improving in some areas.

The report stated job ads were up 1.3 percent in January, a 10 percent lift year on year.

While newspaper ads declined 6.7 percent -- part of a continuing decline in overall print classified ads -- Internet job ads were up 1.3 percent.

Newspaper job ads now make up just 3 percent of all employment ads.

The state of New South Wales led the rise in job ads, the bank' s report stated.

"The relative strength of NSW job ads stands out, and is consistent with other indicators highlighting the state's outperformance," ANZ's Chief Economist Warren Hogan said in the report.

But the outlook was not all positive.

"A gap between job ads and the official data remains, however, most likely reflecting a higher rate of retrenchments in industries such as manufacturing and resources, which suggests that overall labor demand is struggling to keep pace with the flow of new workers into the economy," Hogan said.

"We do not expect a significant change in this dynamic amidst below trend economic growth outcomes, with a further rise in the unemployment rate to 6.5 percent through 2015." Endi
