A clash between security forces and Taliban militants in the eastern Nangarhar province have claimed eight lives, including six insurgents and two police, on Friday night, spokesman for provincial government Ahmad Zia Abdulzai said Saturday.

"The armed insurgents attacked a police checkpoint in Ghani Khil district late Friday night, killing two policemen, but the police retaliated, killing six insurgents on the spot," Abdulzai told reporters.

Taliban-led militancy and conflicts have intensified since NATO- led forces ended combat mission at the end of last year and Afghan security forces assumed security responsibility from Jan. 1 this year. Endi
