Zambia deports 94 illegal immigrants

Xinhua, February 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Zambia has deported 94 illegal immigrants who were arrested recently during an operation conducted in the country's biggest city of Kitwe in Copperbelt Province, a senior official said on Saturday.

Immigration Department Public Relations Officer Namati Nshinka said among those deported include 54 Tanzanians, 39 Congolese and a Ugandan who were arrested for staying in Zambia illegally during an operation on January 30 and 31.

"These were among the 114 persons detained in Kitwe during an operation conducted by Immigration officers on the Copperbelt Province in conjunction with other security wings," he said in a statement.

The illegal immigrants were deported on Wednesday, he added.

The remaining foreigners were released after producing valid documents.

The Immigration authorities also arrested two Indians on Wednesday at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka, the country's capital, for allegedly using suspected forged visas.

Zambia has stepped up measures to curb an influx of illegal migrants who have been accused of being behind some of the heinous crimes in the southern African nation. Endi
