Egyptian president approves 17 new governors

Xinhua, February 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on Thursday approved 17 new governors for provinces, according to the presidential spokesman.

Earlier in the day, the final list of the governors reshuffle was presented to the president by Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab, the spokesman Alaa Youssef said, adding that they will take office on Saturday.

The move was delayed as the list of candidates was previously declined by Sisi for having 11 retired armed forces generals, which would raise opposition criticism over a military-oriented leadership.

The governors of Alexandria, Ismailia, Damietta, Matrouh and Minufiya are expected to be included in the reshuffle, according to local media.

Last August, Local Development Minister Adel Labib revealed that the government plans to establish three new provinces to increase them from current 27 to 30. Endit
