Albania sends troops to flood-hit area

Xinhua, February 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Albanian military has deployed around 83 army troops and some vehicles to conduct rescue operations in the flood- hit areas in south Albania, the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) reported on Thursday.

The country's armed forces are on standby to help those affected mainly in south Albania where the situation deteriorated after the flooding, the Albanian Defense Ministry said.

Heavy rains, snow and strong winds swept entire Albania Wednesday morning and the flood situation in Albania's southern regions is expected to further deteriorate in the coming days.

Albanian authorities have called on evacuated residents in the hardest-hit areas not to return home because the situation remains critical and is expected to worsen.

The Albanian Interior Ministry estimated 5,000 hectares across the country were under water due to the flooding over the past four days. Endi
