UN urges DR Congo to restore SMS, mobile Internet services

Xinhua, February 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Head of the UN Mission for Stabilization of Congo (MONUSCO) Martin Kobler on Wednesday urged Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) government to restore short messaging service (SMS) and mobile Internet services after the protests against the new electoral law.

"Another thing that is concerning us here in Kinshasa is the interruption of the Internet services. It is now difficult to send an SMS or have unlimited access to the Internet," Kobler told media in Kinshasa.

He said that the UN Mission was constantly in contact with the government over these two services.

MONUSCO had initially opposed interruption of the Internet services, but the government insisted on the interruption "for security reasons", he said.

"Now this is not justifiable," MONUSCO head said.

DR Congo government cut off Internet services on Jan. 19 during protests against the new electoral law. Up till now, there has only been partial restoration of the Internet services in the country. Endi
