Afdb grants 1 mln USD to help Madagascar stem plague

The African Development Bank (Afdb) granted one million U.S. dollars to fight against plague in Madagascar, a Wednesday statement from the Afdb said.

The amount will be allocated for the purchase of equipments, pesticides and medicines for the fight against plague in Madagascar, the Afdb representative to Madagascar Abdelkerim Bendjebbour said in the statement.

The fund will be managed by the World Health Organization (WHO) but this UN organization will work closely with the ministry of Health for the use of the money.

A MOU on the donation was signed on Tuesday by the Afdb representative to Madagascar Abdelkerim Bendjebbour, the WHO representative to Madagascar Dr. Celine Seignon, the minister of Finance and Budget Gervais Rakotoarimanana and the minister of Health Mamy Andriamanarivo.

Data from the ministry of Health showed plague affected 263 people and killed 71 of them in Madagascar since September 2014.
