Irish cabinet introduces measures to reduce alcohol consumption

The Irish cabinet on Tuesday signed off plans to ban below-cost selling of alcohol products by introducing a minimum pricing unit.
The cheap alcohol restrictions, part of the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015, aim to reduce alcohol consumption and tackle alcohol misuse, which will help Ireland to cut alcohol consumption to OECD averages by 2020.
The restrictions mainly include: provisions to prevent the sale of very cheap alcohol, health labelling and warnings on products including calorie counts; and new enforcement powers for environmental health officers to enforce the separation of alcohol within stores.
Environmental health officers will also be empowered to police minimum unit pricing, health labelling, marketing and advertising.
Under the new measures, it will be illegal to market or advertise alcohol in a manner that is appealing to children. Endit
